CM Mamata Banerjee unveils Rs 1,200 Cr plan for Sundarbans and Muriganga bridge

At Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a Rs 1,200‑crore allocation to boost the Sundarbans region and construct the Muriganga bridge, with a target completion date of 2029. The move aims to enhance connectivity, promote eco‑tourism and support local livelihoods in the deltaic belt.

The announcement was made during a press meet at Kakdwip, where Mamata Banerjee outlined a comprehensive development scheme for the Sundarbans. The Rs 1,200 crore package will fund infrastructure upgrades, flood defence measures and eco‑tourism projects in the mangrove forests.

A key highlight is the construction of the Muriganga bridge, which will link the mainland to the islands, easing transport for residents and tourists alike. The bridge is expected to cut travel time significantly and open up new economic opportunities.

The state government plans to complete the bridge and associated works by 2029, aligning with its broader vision to turn the Sundarbans into a sustainable, world‑class tourist destination while safeguarding the fragile ecosystem.
