Kolkata City Warns South‑Kolkata Puja Organisers to Keep Roads and Footpaths Clear

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has issued a directive to puja organisers in the southern part of the city, instructing them to ensure that roads and pedestrian pathways remain unobstructed during festival preparations. The move aims to prevent traffic snarls and enhance safety for commuters. Organisers are urged to coordinate with local authorities and adhere to the guidelines to minimise disruptions.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has notified puja organisers in South Kolkata to keep roads and pedestrian paths clear during the upcoming festival season. The directive came after several reports of traffic congestion and blocked footpaths caused by large‑scale puja setups. Organisers are required to coordinate with KMC officials, secure necessary permits, and ensure that any temporary structures do not obstruct public thoroughfares. Failure to comply with the guidelines may result in fines or removal of the puja stalls.

The municipal body emphasised that maintaining open access to streets and sidewalks is essential for the safety of pedestrians and the smooth flow of traffic. Local residents have expressed relief at the clearer roads, citing reduced travel time and fewer accidents.

Puja organisers have been encouraged to enlist community volunteers for timely removal of materials once the festival concludes, and to keep emergency access routes unobstructed at all times.
