Kolkata Prepares to Rename Streets Honouring Lenin, Marx, Ho Chi Minh

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has announced plans to rename several streets that bear the names of Soviet and Vietnamese leaders – Lenin, Karl Marx and Ho Chi Minh. A dedicated committee will review each street’s history and propose new names that reflect local heritage. The move is part of a broader effort to update the city’s toponymy and is expected to be finalized by the end of the year.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has opened a renaming process for streets that carry the names of prominent communist leaders. Streets named after Lenin, Karl Marx and Ho Chi Minh are among the first to be considered for new titles that better represent the city’s cultural and historical identity.

A special committee has been appointed to examine the history of each street, gather public input and recommend appropriate replacements. In addition to the three noted streets, the committee will review a list of other “saranis” that are pending renaming.

Officials say the initiative is part of a broader effort to modernise Kolkata’s toponymy and to honour local figures and heritage. The committee is expected to submit its final recommendations to the municipal council by the end of the year, after which the new names will be officially gazetted.

Residents are encouraged to submit suggestions or objections through the municipal corporation’s online portal or at the local ward offices.
