The bustling New Market in central Kolkata, known for its diverse stalls and historic charm, has become a focal point of congestion as traders and hawkers set up shop on roadways and parking areas.
Recent reports indicate that stalls have been erected on sidewalks and temporary booths have been erected in spaces that impede vehicular movement, sparking confrontations between traders and hawkers over the right to occupy these areas.
City traffic police and the municipal corporation have issued notices demanding removal of the encroachments, but enforcement has been uneven, leaving the dispute unresolved and traffic flow further compromised.
Local residents and commuters have noted frequent bottlenecks during peak hours, urging authorities to enforce clearer regulations and improve space management in the commercial hub.
