Tiruvannamalai Residents Protest Over Drinking Water Shortage

In Tiruvannamalai, a crowd of residents gathered to protest the ongoing lack of potable water. Local officials confirmed that the motor pumps used to draw water from borewells in the riverbed are no longer functional, leaving the community without a reliable supply. The protest underscores the need for immediate repairs or alternative solutions, and calls on municipal authorities to act swiftly.

A group of residents assembled in the heart of Tiruvannamalai to voice their frustration over the continued absence of drinking water. The protest, which drew several hundred participants, took place on the main thoroughfare near the town’s municipal office.

The water supply issue stems from motor pumps that were installed to extract water from borewells located along the riverbed. According to the panchayat, these pumps have become inoperable, leaving the existing infrastructure unable to meet the town’s basic needs.

Panchayat officials explained that the failure is due to the pumps’ age and lack of maintenance. They acknowledged the urgency of the situation and indicated that a repair plan is being drafted, though specific timelines remain unclear.

The lack of potable water has forced many residents to rely on bottled water and to travel long distances for basic hydration. Community leaders have urged the local government to expedite the restoration of the pumps or to provide a temporary supply solution while permanent repairs are carried out.
